Happy Thursday!
This week’s Decaf is brought to you by Faith that Sticks, which provides practical tips for disciplining preteens (always a joy).
Today’s story was taken from The Pour Over’s July 7th and July 9th emails and rewritten at a 7th-grade reading level.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“God writes the Gospel not in the Bible alone, but also on trees, and in the flowers and clouds and stars.”
Martin Luther

U.S. NEWS
Texas Floods
Flash floods hit Texas Hill Country early Friday, and they were worse than anyone expected.
In just one hour, the Guadalupe River rose over 20 feet. The rushing water swept away homes, RVs, and even entire cabins. One of the hardest-hit places was Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp for girls. The camp had over 700 kids and staff. So far, 27 campers and counselors have died, and 11 are still missing. The camp director died while helping others get to safety.
Rescue crews have been working nonstop. Over 400 people (including the National Guard and Coast Guard) are using boats, helicopters, and drones to search for survivors. One Coast Guard swimmer, on his very first rescue mission, saved 165 people.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott called for a Day of Prayer and declared a disaster in 15 counties. People across the state have gathered to pray and support each other during this time.

Verse to consider when you’re at a loss for words in the face of tragedy… “weep with those who weep.”
Romans 12:15

What response to this story do I want to model for my children?
It’s ok to be heartbroken and to show children our anguish.
Scripture is clear that there is a time to mourn (Ecclesiastes 3) and we should weep with those who weep (Romans 12) even as we are confident in God’s ability to work all things together for good (Romans 8).
The promise of heaven does not remove the pains of this tragedy, but it does give hope, strength, and peace during life’s most difficult seasons. In John 14:3, Jesus says: “If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you to myself, so that where I am you may be also.” He has prepared a place for all who call on his name to go to, to live with him forever in a place with no more grief or death (Revelation 22).
What do I want to make sure my kids know in light of this story?
Tragedy can also provide opportunity for the body of Christ to step up and minister to those in need. Hebrews 13:16 says, “Don’t neglect to do what is good and to share, for God is pleased with such sacrifices.”
If this story has moved your children, giving them an avenue to help can be an awesome next step.
Those nearby have stepped in as volunteers, while those of us removed can donate to help the effort. There are many great organizations; the TPO Community has given over $75,000 to on-the-ground efforts through our partner Operation Blessing.

Talk as a family about your feelings regarding this tragedy, encouraging everyone to be honest.
(If this tragedy is impacting your family more acutely, sign up for the Helping Your Kids Cope With Crisis webinar tonight from 7-8 PM Central, put on by a Christian foundation with a camp near Camp Mystic.)Memorize Romans 12:15: “Weep with those who weep.”
Pray for those mourning in Texas, for those still working to recover victims, and for those rebuilding.

With Jewish Voice's Zehra Kids Camp*
While parents in Africa receive free medical and dental care, their kids get something just as (even more) life-changing: the love of Jesus.
Zehra Kids Camp welcomes hundreds of Jewish children and their neighbors for a day packed with songs, Bible stories, crafts, games, and giggles. It's not just playtime, though—it's a time to intentionally plant Gospel seeds in hearts that may otherwise never hear the name of Jesus.
You can help make it happen. Support Zehra Kids and bring the gospel to the next generation—one joyful camp day at a time.
