Hey Decaf fam,
This week’s lighthearted edition of Decaf was finished as news broke about a school shooting in Minneapolis. To learn more and pray for the community, see this post. And for deeper reflection, check out this Decaf from last year. We’ll have more on this story in The Pour Over’s Friday edition tomorrow. Lord, have mercy.

This week's Decaf is brought to you by our friends at FamilyLife, whose small group study, The Art of Marriage, is equipping couples to grow in Christ and in community.

Today’s story was taken from The Pour Over’s August 27th email and rewritten at a 7th-grade reading level.

POP CULTURE

So High School

Travis Kelce took a knee to win his girl, Taylor Swift.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end and record-shattering singer-songwriter shared pics of their engagement on Instagram on Tuesday. Kelce popped the question in a romantic garden overflowing with flowers. He gave the popstar a rare, massive diamond with a vintage look (see pics here). The post was captioned with, “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married,” and included a snippet of Swift’s song “So High School.”

The announcement comes just a few weeks after Taylor appeared on the Kelce brothers’ podcast, New Heights. On the pod, the megastar gave her most in-depth interview in years. Swift also spilled the tea on The Life of a Showgirl, her new album, releasing in October.

Tayvis met in 2023 after Kelce attended the Eras Tour in Kansas City. The Lombardi winner tried to give the Emmy collector a friendship bracelet with his number on it. But he didn’t get to meet her after the show. (Turns out you can’t just walk up to TSwift, even if you’re TKelce.) So he took to the podcast to tell the world he wanted to connect with her. Their friends and family sprang into action to set them up… and the rest is history.

With football starting, a new album releasing, and wedding details anticipated, it’s going to be an exciting fall for Swifties Swelcies.

ETERNAL PERSPECTIVE
The world has different priorities than God does, and many temporary things are compelling for a season. Celebrity celebrations aren't wrong to follow, but they shouldn’t consume our attention.

“‘Everything is permissible,’ but not everything is beneficial. ‘Everything is permissible,’ but not everything builds up… So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.”
1 Corinthians 10:23, 31 (CSB) (read full passage)

What do I want to make sure my kids know in light of this story?
Beware of the deceptive pull of worldly things.

Beautiful things—like one-of-a-kind diamonds and fairytale flowers—are captivating. And that’s not a bad thing… we were made to appreciate (and create) beauty.

But there’s a dangerous twist that happens in our sinful hearts: we shift from appreciating beautiful things and giving God glory as a good Creator, and we begin craving ownership, wanting to hoard delights for ourselves (and show them off to others) so that we get glory. We long for the beautiful jewelry, the fancy car, the cushy home, the perfect wardrobe, no longer content with or thankful for what God has given. And we pursue the temporary pleasures of the world instead of the permanent rewards of God’s kingdom (1 John 2:15-17). Beware.

What might my kids misunderstand about this story?
We often tell kids not to care what others think… but sometimes they should.

Swift and Kelce were encouraged to get to know each other by people they trust (like Taylor’s dad and Travis’s coach). Their story is a testimony to the positive influence people can have when they know us and we trust them.

We usually think we know best, but we all have blind spots that can lead us astray. That’s why the Bible urges us to seek wise counselors… and then humbly listen to what they have to say:

  • “A fool’s way is right in his own eyes, but whoever listens to counsel is wise” (Proverbs 12:15 CSB).

  • “Plans fail when there is no counsel, but with many advisers they succeed” (Proverbs 15:22 CSB).

  • “Listen to counsel and receive instruction so that you may be wise later in life” (Proverbs 19:20 CSB).

  • Ask the advice of a few people you trust (parents, teachers, church leaders) as you weigh an upcoming decision.

  • Memorize Philippians 4:12b-13, “In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being content—whether well fed or hungry, whether in abundance or in need. I am able to do all things through him who strengthens me” (CSB).

  • Repent if you’ve coveted the possessions of your neighbors, and ask the Lord to untwist your heart so you’re content, grateful, and mission-focused.
