Happy Thursday!
Today’s Decaf is brought to you by our friends at American Heritage Girls, a scout-type character development program with an emphasis on growing faith and involving the whole family.

Today’s story was taken from The Pour Over’s May 20th email and re-written at a 7th-grade reading level.

Big Misunderstanding

The world’s best golfer was going for a trophy but ended up with a mugshot.

Scottie Scheffler was arrested early Friday while trying to enter Louisville’s Valhalla Golf Club. He was there for the PGA Championship, one of the biggest events in golf.

An hour earlier, a man working security was killed by a bus outside of the course’s gates. Police had stopped traffic to investigate. Unaware of the accident, Scheffler arrived for warmups and tried to drive around the traffic jam. He was reportedly told to stop but didn’t. An officer “attached himself” to Scheffler’s car, got dragged, and suffered minor injuries.

Scheffler was charged with assaulting a police officer, driving recklessly, and ignoring police’s traffic direction. He was released in time to tee off and finished tied for 8th. (American Xander Schauffele won the tournament in his first major win.)

The two-time Masters champ called the incident a “big misunderstanding.” Charges are expected to be dropped.

CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE
Pray for the family of the man who lost his life on Friday, even as we are all reminded that each day is a gift from God. And every day is an opportunity for us to live a life worthy of His calling.

“Therefore I, the prisoner in the Lord, urge you to walk worthy of the calling you have received.”
Ephesians 4:1 (CSB) (read full passage)

What gospel lesson can be taught through this story?
Our most surprising days don’t surprise God.

Championship day didn’t go as expected for anyone involved: the man who was killed and his family, the police who responded, and Scheffler… they would have preferred a peaceful day on the green. But the shock of it all didn’t shake God.

Towards the end of Job (the book), Job (the man) says, “I know that you can do anything and no plan of yours can be thwarted” (42:2 CSB). Sometimes, God’s actions don’t make sense to us, and a different outcome seems like it would be better. But we can trust that God not only knows what’s best; he’s completely powerful enough to see his plans through.

What do I want to make sure my kids know in light of this story?
When we can’t control our circumstances, we can control our response.

Scheffler was reportedly kind to everyone involved in the incident on Friday, speaking highly of the police and jailers even as he faced major disappointment. Many things in life are not in our hands, but our own behavior is.

When you’re stuck in a challenging situation, you can show that your hope in Christ isn’t shaken by continuing to obey his commands to love others (Matthew 22:34-40; 1 Peter 3:8-17)

  • Tell a story of when something unexpected (or even unwanted) happened, and what came out of it turned out to be better than you planned.

  • Memorize Ephesians 4:1, “Therefore I, the prisoner in the Lord, urge you to walk worthy of the calling you have received” (CSB).

  • Pray for the Holy Spirit’s help in responding to disappointment with patience and graciousness so that others will see the hope of Christ in you.
