POLITICS

Passing the Torch

President Biden has dropped out of the race for president.

Sunday, in a post on X, the President announced he’s ending his reelection campaign. The decision comes after his much-criticized debate performance last month and weeks of pressure from members of his own party.

He didn’t say why he was dropping out, just that it is “in the best interest of my party and the country.” Biden said now he can “focus" on his presidential duties. Shortly after his announcement, he endorsed VP Kamala Harris. This means he’s “team Kamala Harris.”

The Democratic convention is next month. It was supposed to be simple: delegates vote for Biden, because he won the Democratic primary elections this spring. Then, he accepts their nomination. But now, delegates could support anyone they choose in the “open” convention.

It’s looking like the majority of Democrats want Vice President Harris. She’s gotten the support of enough delegates to lock down the nomination. Major Democrats (like former House Speaker Pelosi and all 23 blue-state governors) have endorsed her. And donors are supporting her too: she raised $81 million in 24 hours. That’s more than President Biden’s campaign raised in three months!

CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE
Our goal is to keep the big things big and the small things small. It’s not that the presidential race changing isn’t important; it’s just not God-of-the-Universe important. No matter what happens in the 2024 U.S. election, God will remain in control.

“The life of every living thing is in his hand, as well as the breath of all humanity.”
Job 12:10 (CSB)

How can I model putting my hope and trust in Christ when discussing this story?
Model confidence and contentment in Christ no matter the political outcome.

Americans on both sides of the aisle are saying that there’s a lot at stake in this election. The Bible doesn’t tell us, “don’t be anxious unless the stakes are high,” it says, “Don’t worry about anything” (Philippians 4:6-7 CSB).

Give your anxiety to the one who cares for you (1 Peter 5:7) and model contentment no matter your country’s circumstances (Philippians 4:12). We know how this story ends.

How can I explain balancing love and truth?
With a (kind of) new candidate in the race, a fresh wave of mud-slinging has begun.

Explain to your kids how you can disagree with a person’s political position without disparaging them. Each candidate—and those who support them—bears God’s image and is loved by him.

Even as you seek to make our temporary home better through your political decisions, speak about others with kindness and respect, and “do to others what you would have them do to you” (Matthew 7:12 CSB).

  • Write a list of all the things that make you anxious, whether political news or otherwise. Pray over them all, then find a creative way to symbolize giving them to God (burn them, shred them, nail them to a cross, etc.)

  • Memorize 1 Peter 5:7: “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” (NIV).

  • Confess to God anything you’ve said that disparages people he loves. Ask for help speaking to others respectfully, even when you disagree.
